Woman campaigns to end canine cancer; Hemp City moves out ...

Happy Monday, Northwest Portland blog readers! Here's some news to get you caught up from the weekend:

-- Woman works to end canine cancer:
The Oregonian's freelance pet writer, Monique Balas, wrote a story published Friday about Warren resident Cera Reusser?s campaign to end canine cancer. She started the campaign to help fund cancer research after her beloved 6-year-old Labrador died of it.

The pup, named Chase, was treated at Northwest Portland's Veterinary Cancer Referral Center. For the full story, read The Oregonian's pet blog.

-- Hemp City moves out of Nob Hill: The January issue of The Northwest Examiner, a monthly newspaper based in and about Northwest Portland, had a brief about the quick exit of Hemp City, a medical marijuana dispensary that was located in Nob Hill.

The Examiner's story said "the business vacated suddenly in late December." And that the landlord, who lives in Canada, said the store "left without notice and without paying rent," the story said.

Hemp City was at 921 N.W. 23rd Ave. for less than a month.

Retirement funds in Kentucky lose big with hedge fund failure

Retirement funds for Kentucky state and local workers see $100 million loss after hedge fund fails. Official expects to recoup the retirement funds lost.

A Connecticut-based hedge?fund?that included $100 million in investments by the Kentucky?Retirement?Systems has failed and will shut down.

T.J. Carlson is chief investment officer for the Kentucky?Retirement?Systems. Carlson told the Lexington Herald-Leader that Arrowhawk Capital Partners of Darien, Conn., couldn't raise enough money from investors to succeed (http://bit.ly/wCj1l2?).

Carlson said on Thursday that the?retirement?system expects to get its $100 million back as Arrowhawk carefully unwinds its portfolio. The system oversees $13 billion in?retirement?funds?for state and local government employees.

Arrowhawk did not return a call seeking comment.

The decision to invest in Arrowhawk came under scrutiny in June when state Auditor Crit Luallen linked the fund?to a middleman who received about $6 million in fees for arranging the investments.

After rough night for Nevada officials, ?King Mo? offers to give Kim Winslow reffing lessons

Landing 15 unanswered shots, Muhammed Lawal nearly beat Lorenz Larkin into oblivion to pick up his ninth career win. "King Mo" was far from jubilant. In fact, he was angry following the victory. Lawal lashed out at the referee Kim Winslow for not protecting his opponent.

In the ring, Lawal screamed out a suggestion that Winslow shouldn't be reffing fights. In the postfight press conference, he brought it even stronger.

"The commission, they need to like to do something with her ... let her take a fight or something and give her a bad ref. Let her fight [Cristiane] "Cyborg" Santos and let's do a late stoppage with her," said Lawal."The tables need to be turned. Put me in there as a ref and I'll do a terrible job like her."

Winslow's decision to allow a limp Larkin to absorb 6-8 extra punches was shaky, but her explanation to Lawal was even worse.

"She said 'well, I wanted to give him every opportunity to bounce back. If it takes for him to be asleep, that's what it is,'" said Lawal. "She's never taken a punch before, so it's easy for her to say that."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker suggested that it been rough night overall for the Nevada State Athletic Commission appointed referees and judges.

In an earlier fight, Winslow also allowed Gian Villante to finish off Trevor Smith with two illegal shots to the back of the head. Smith spoke to Aaron Tru about the end of the fight and said Winslow "has no business in the sport." Smith said Winslow tried to make up for a poor early stoppage in his fight by allowing Larkin to take an extra beating.

The scoring in two other fights confused cageside observers. Most onlookers thought Tyron Woodley rolled to a 30-27 decision over Jordan Mein, but one judge gave it 29-28 to Mein, who spent most of the fight on his back. The same goes for James Terry's loss to Nah-Shon Burrell got the nod 29-28 on two scorecards and looked completely shocked when he was announced as the winner.

Salt water alone unlikely to halt Burmese python invasion

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Invasive Burmese python hatchlings from the Florida Everglades can withstand exposure to salt water long enough to potentially expand their range through ocean and estuarine environments, according to research in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology.

This recent study, based on lab experiments conducted by researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey, provides initial evidence that pythons may be able to survive in marine and estuarine environments such as bays, inlets and open seas. The results raise concerns that the invasive constrictor may invade nearby islands, such as the Florida Keys, said Kristen Hart, a USGS research ecologist and lead author of the study.

"Because reptiles, in general, have poor salinity tolerance, it was hoped that salt water would naturally hinder pythons' ability to expand their range beyond the Everglades," Hart said." Unfortunately, our results suggest salt water alone cannot act as a reliable barrier to the Everglades python population."

Before the study, Burmese pythons had been found in brackish margins of the Everglades, the expansive and predominantly freshwater wetland that is home to the only known wild-breeding population of Burmese pythons in the United States. Yet, no information was available to indicate how long the snakes could persist in saline environments.

The issue of salinity tolerance is critical for understanding the risks of the giant constrictors spreading beyond the Everglades, given the Everglades location on the southernmost end of the South Florida peninsula.

"The fact that this study has ruled out one of the most hoped-for forms of physical barriers, salt water, as preventing the spread of invasive pythons in Florida puts even more onus on human action to prevent the spread of these damaging reptiles," explained USGS director Marcia McNutt. "This study demonstrates the distinct possibility that pythons could spread to new suitable habitats one estuary at a time."

In the lab, researchers tested how long hatchling pythons could survive with only salt water to drink. They found that, when given access only to water with salinity levels equivalent to full marine water, hatchling pythons straight out of their eggs lived about a month. At salinity levels comparable with estuaries, the hatchlings survived about five months.

The USGS research demonstrated, however, that varying salinity levels did affect the snakes, as reflected in significant survival differences between pythons exposed to freshwater, marine, and estuarine salinities in the lab. However, because hatchlings are considered the most vulnerable stage of the python's life, it's likely that adult snakes could persist even longer in saltwater environments, Hart and her colleagues noted.

By comparison, pythons in the study displayed a saltwater tolerance level near that of the native mangrove snake, a salinity-tolerant native snake found in high-salinity environments in and around the Everglades.

Although the study didn't account for the effect that access to food in saltwater environments would have on survival, lab conditions were designed to provide a conservative estimate of snake tolerance to salinity, by not allowing for the possibility that snakes could access freshwater from rain.

Giants win NFC East, beat Cowboys 31-14 (AP)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? Thanks to Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, an all-or-nothing game was all New York Giants and nothing but frustration for the Dallas Cowboys.

Manning threw three touchdown passes, including a momentum-grabbing 74-yarder to Cruz early, and the Giants claimed the final spot in the NFL playoffs, beating the Cowboys 31-14 on Sunday night to win the NFC East.

"I knew we were going to fight and keep playing until the end, I feel good about the way we're handling the ups and downs, and it comes down to finishing," Manning said after throwing for 346 yards and no interceptions.

New York (9-7) won three of its final four games for 65-year-old coach Tom Coughlin and earned a wild-card home game next Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons (10-6).

"We've had a lot of ups and down, but when our team needed it most we responded," said the up-and-coming Cruz, who has capped his team-record setting season with six catches for 178 yards. "We were able to keep level-headed when we were on the four-game skid."

The Cowboys (8-8) lost four of their final five games in their first full season under coach Jason Garrett.

Dallas was its own worst enemy with the season on the line. It missed tackles on all three of the Giants' three first-half touchdowns, failed to recover two fumbles within its grasp in the half and failed to convert on a Tony Romo sneak on fourth-and-1 at the Giants 10 while trailing 21-7.

"It's extremely painful and it's a damn shame," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We have a good team and I thought we would be going to the playoffs, but that didn't happen. We have to be able to take some of the good with the bad and move on. We did a lot of good things this year, but to point to one thing why this happened would be subjective. We're 8-8 and we have to be better than that."

Romo, who played with a bruised right hand, moved the Cowboys in the second half but all he could generate were touchdown passes of 34 and 6 yards to Laurent Robinson.

"You can't make excuses,' said Romo, who finished 29 of 37 for 289 yards and one interception. "Either you win or you go home. Give them credit for coming in here and being ready. This is not going to sit well with me or anyone else on this team. It should fuel the fire to come back, but right now, it hurts."

The shorter touchdown pass to Robinson got Dallas within a 21-14 with 10:15 to play, but Cruz, the second-year pro from nearby Paterson who has become a fan favorite with a big plays and salsa celebrations, came through again.

Cruz boxed-out cornerback Orlando Scandrick on 44-yard third-down jump-ball catch and caught another for 20 yards to set up a 28-yard Lawrence Tynes' field goal. Manning iced the game with a 4-yard TD pass to Hakeem Nicks with 3:41 to play.

Manning finished 24 of 33 as the Giants beat the Cowboys for the second time in four games and ended a regular season marked by inconsistency on a high note. Cruz, who set a single-season record for yards receiving, averaged 29.7 yards on the night, and of course, he did his touchdown salsa after the first score.

"He's unbelievable," Giants guard Chris Snee said. "He's so explosive. He's so quick, he just runs away from people. He unbelivable. I don't know what else to say about the guy."

The Giants defense sacked Romo six times, including twice by Osi Umenyiora who returned to the lineup for the first time since spraining an ankle late last month. Dallas' final possession ended with Romo being sacked by Justin Tuck and losing a fumble.

"We needed this win," Umenyiora said. "This is the biggest win we've been a part of for a while."

The Giants haven't won a playoff game since beating the-then unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2008, and the one thing that is seemingly apparent is that this team is peaking.

Coming off a 29-14 win over the rival Jets last week in what might have been the Giants best game of the season, Coughlin's team put together another outstanding 30 minutes in jumping to a 21-0 halftime lead.

Cruz, who sparked the win over the Jets' with a team-record 99-yard touchdown, made another monster play on the Giants' second offensive series, turning a short pass into points.

Cruz caught a short square out, eluded a tackle by Terence Newman, turned the corner after getting a seal block from Nicks and outraced two defenders down the sideline in front of the Giants bench for a 7-0 lead.

Dallas went three-and-out but had a chance to get right back into the game when Will Blackmon muffed a punt at near his 30-yard line and Alan Ball failed to recover.

Manning made Dallas pay. Manning hit Nicks for 18 yards and Devin Thomas for 14 en route on a 68-yard yard drive that Bradshaw capped with his 5-yard run. Safety Abram Elam had a chance to tackle Bradshaw in the backfield and Bradshaw scooted into the end zone after he missed.

Manning had passes of 14 and 12 yards to rookie fullback Henry Hynoski in an 80-yard touchdown drive just before the half. Bradshaw, who had a 29-yard run early in the drive, broke a tackle by linebacker Bradie James in scoring on a 10-yard swing pass for a 21-0 lead.

The Giants had chances to put the game away in the third quarter. They moved to the Dallas 42 on the opening possession of the second half and elected to punt.

Romo then drove the Cowboys 94 yards with a no-huddle offense, hitting Robinson on a 34-yard go pattern down the right sideline on a play that cornerback Corey Webster was beaten.

An interception by safety Antrel Rolle gave New York the ball in Dallas territory but they failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at the Dallas 35 and the Cowboys came right back to cut the deficit to seven.

Notes: Cowboys G Kyle Kosier left the game with a knee injury and was replaced by Kevin Kowalski replaced him. ...Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware had 1 1/2 sacks and finished the season with 19 1/2. ...LB Sean Lee led the Cowboys with 11 tackles. ...LB Mike Boley had nine for the Giants. ...New York's other sacks were registered by Jason Pierre-Paul (16 1/2), LB Jacquian Williams, Tuck and Chris Canty. ...Dallas was limited to 49 yards rushing on 16 carries.

North Korea calls for "human shields" to protect new leader (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korea called on its people to rally behind new leader Kim Jong-un and protect him as "human shields" while working to solve the "burning issue" of food shortages by upholding the policies of his late father, Kim Jong-il.

The North's three main state newspapers said in a policy-setting editorial traditionally published on New Year's Day that Kim Jong-un has legitimacy to carry on the revolutionary battle initiated by his grandfather, Kim Il-sung, and developed by his father, the iron-fisted ruler who died two weeks ago.

"Kim Jong-un, the supreme leader of our Party and our people, is the banner of victory and glory of Songun (military-first) Korea and the eternal centre of its unity," the 5,000-word editorial carried by the North's state KCNA news agency said.

Asserting that the inexperienced young Kim, in his late 20s, is "precisely" identical to his father, the editorial said "the whole Party, the entire army and all the people should possess a firm conviction that they will become human bulwarks and human shields in defending Kim Jong-un unto death."

Notably, the editorial called North Korea's food problem "a burning issue" for the ruling Workers' Party to solve and build "a thriving country."

"Glorify this year 2012 as a year of proud victory, a year when an era of prosperity is unfolding, true to the instructions of the great General Kim Jong-il," the editorial said.

The destitute North has been suffering from chronic food shortages, relying heavily on outside aid. A U.N. report said in November the isolated communist state needs food assistance for nearly 3 million of its 24 million people in 2012.

NO MENTION OF NUCLEAR ARMS

Many Korea-watchers in Seoul say the editorial did not suggest any major new changes in social or economic policies but appeared to be sensitive over the food issue.

"In order to solidify and stabilize his grip on power, tackling the food problem is one of the top agenda topics Kim Jong-un should deal with for now," Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Koran Studies, told Reuters.

The editorial also assailed the South Korean government for pursuing confrontation despite efforts by the North to reopen dialogue, and it repeated its demand for the withdrawal of the U.S. military from the South.

But conspicuously absent from the editorial was any mention of North Korea's nuclear arms program, the key source of regional security concerns during Kim Jong-il's reign.

"The North seems poised to focus its polices on stabilizing domestic matters such as economic issues for the time being rather than to aggressively come forward with diplomatic affairs," said Yoo Ho-yeol, an North Korea expert at Korea University.

The North's remarks on the nuclear issue were featured prominently in previous New Year's Day editorials.

Momentum was building in diplomatic contacts between the North and the United States before the announcement of Kim Jong-il's death, raising expectations the two sides may be closer to reaching a compromise to restart stalled talks aimed at ending the North's nuclear program.

Those talks stalled in 2008 when Pyongyang baulked at inspections of its nuclear sites under a 2005 deal by six countries -- the two Koreas, the United States, China, Japan and Russia -- to give the impoverished North aid in return for disarmament.

"By giving up on comments on the nuclear issue, the North would secure much room in negotiations with the United States and the other signatories of the six-party talks," said Yang.

In a fiery message last week that marked the first communication with the outside world since Kim Jong-il's death, the North's National Defence Commission, which is seen as the apex of power, declared it would not deal with the current government in the South.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak angered Pyongyang by cutting off aid to its destitute neighbor when he took office in 2008, demanding nuclear disarmament and economic reform as preconditions to reopen food assistance and political engagement.

Tensions on the divided peninsula reached a new peak in 2010 when the North launched an artillery barrage into a South Korean island, killing civilians. The North was also blamed for a torpedo attack against a South Korean navy ship that killed 46.

North and South Korea are technically still at war under a truce ending the 1950-53 Korean War.

KCNA said later on Sunday that Kim Jong-un visited an army tank division in what it said was the first military inspection as supreme commander. The move signaled Kim would be continuing the kind of trips taken by his father as the key public appearances that publicized his activity as national leader.

The North's state media said on Saturday Kim Jong-un has been officially appointed supreme commander of its 1.2-million strong military, two days after the official mourning for the dead leader ended, in a move seen as a rush to solidify succession and boost the younger Kim's grip on power.

Kim Jong-un was named a four-star general and given the vice-chairmanship of the ruling party's Central Military Commission by his father in 2010.

Experts believe the untested new leader, who had only been groomed for power since 2009, will rule with the aid of a close coterie that includes his uncle and key power-broker, Jang Song-thaek, at least in the early stages of the leadership transition.

Broncos in playoffs despite 7-3 loss to Chiefs (AP)

DENVER ? Tim Tebow had plenty more gaffes ? and one last laugh.

Despite a second straight dismal performance and two more turnovers by Tebow, the Broncos were celebrating a trip to the playoffs Sunday after losing 7-3 to Kyle Orton and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Their six-year playoff drought is history.

Even though Tebow completed just 6 of 22 passes for 60 yards, killed a promising drive with a red zone fumble and capped an awful afternoon with an interception in the waning seconds, he's the one preparing for the playoffs while Orton regroups from a trying season and gets ready for free agency.

Tebow couldn't beat the guy he couldn't beat out in training camp.

"It's obviously a little bittersweet right now," Tebow said. "We would have loved to have won that game to have a little momentum going into the playoffs. But I think it's still a special thing what we accomplished, to come back and win the AFC West is very special."

Orton outperformed Tebow every time they were on the football field together, from training camp through Sunday's season finale. In between, however, Orton caved under the weight of Tebowmania and was benched by the Broncos before being released and grabbed off waivers by the Chiefs.

Orton had laid low all week but he finally admitted after the game that this game had special meaning to him, even though it was for pride and payback and not the playoffs.

"I can't hide that," he said. "But I congratulate those guys. They're in. I congratulate them and I look forward to next year."

The Broncos (8-8) will face the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) Sunday at Mile High, their first home playoff game since Ben Roethlisberger beat Jake Plummer in the AFC title game following the 2005 season.

"We go out there and perform like we did the past three weeks, we don't stand a chance," Champ Bailey said. "We've got to get better."

In a hurry.

Tebow has turned the ball over seven times in Denver's three-game losing streak and the Broncos haven't managed a single takeaway since they beat Chicago in overtime on Dec. 11 for their fourth straight fourth-quarter comeback.

"We'll, we're AFC West champs," Broncos coach John Fox retorted. "It doesn't matter how you do it. Once you get into the dance, they can't kick you out."

But you can get bounced pretty quickly, something the Broncos know is a strong possibility if they don't get their act together.

"Everything is mediocre," Bailey said. "We've got to get better. If we want to make any kind of fuss in the playoffs, we've got to get better."

The Broncos begrudgingly congratulated Orton, then trudged off to the locker room, where they watched the San Diego Chargers finish off the Oakland Raiders 38-26.

The Broncos, Raiders and Chargers all finished 8-8, but Denver won the AFC West with a better record against common opponents. The Chiefs finished 7-9 and avoided reaching double digits in losses for a fourth time in five years.

Orton, who also handed Green Bay its only loss, went 2-1 in Kansas City. His steady play likely raised his stock as he prepares to enter free agency. And he might have secured interim coach Romeo Crennel's future.

Best of all, he beat the team that benched him after the Broncos stumbled to a 1-4 start, banishing him to third string behind Brady Quinn to run the scout team against Denver's No. 1 defense.

Those notes came in handy Sunday.

The Broncos saved $2.6 million by releasing Orton just before Thanksgiving, but he nearly made them pay an even heftier price for that decision, completing 15 of 29 passes for 180 yards against his former team and connecting with Dwayne Bowe six times for 93 yards before losing him for the second half with a suspected concussion.

"Dwayne was on fire in the first half, and then to lose him for the rest of the game, that really hurt our offense," Orton said. "I have the utmost respect for Champ Bailey, but Dwayne had him turning around in circles a couple times out there."

The Broncos lost two offensive starters in the first half when right guard Chris Kuper, the stalwart on an otherwise young line, broke his left leg and fullback Spencer Larsen hurt a knee.

"That was a big blow," offensive tackle Ryan Clady said. "But we really rallied. I'm the first to tell you that I nearly broke down because of that. It was scary. He's a good friend of mine and a leader on the offensive line. But we were able to rally and rush the ball and protect pretty well. We've got to move on and hope he recovers fast."

Kuper's injury made Orton's day bittersweet, too.

"Chris Kuper is a very good friend of mine and to see what happened to him really put a damper on things," Orton said. "He's a great teammate, a great leader on that team and I hope he's able to get back as soon as possible."

Neither QB had a great day. The game's only touchdown came on Dexter McCluster's 21-yard scamper in the first quarter, so this game was as much about the Punting Colquitt brothers, Dustin and Britton, as it was about Orton vs. Tebow.

The Broncos' only score came on Matt Prater's 38-yarder in the third quarter, which followed Javier Arenas' muffed punt at his own 20.

Tebow had one last shot at another miracle comeback when the Broncos got the ball at their 16 with just under a minute left.

Because Fox had declined to go for a 57-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half ? he was afraid a miss would set up the Chiefs for a double-digit halftime lead ? the Broncos had to go 84 yards instead of just needing to get into range for another game-winner by Prater.

Tebow, who had completed four passes all afternoon with the Broncos running 47 times for 216 yards, including 145 by Willis McGahee, suddenly had to chuck it.

And he was intercepted by cornerback Brandon Carr with 8 seconds left.

Had Denver not backed into the playoffs, boss John Elway's dangerous decision to release Orton at midseason would have gone down as one of the biggest blunders in Broncos history.

Instead, it was a footnote in the Broncos' return to the postseason parade just one season after a franchise-worst 4-12 debacle.

"Nobody said how you had to get in," Broncos linebacker Mario Haggan said. "It's what you do with the opportunity once you get there."

Notes: The Broncos have lost all nine times they've met the Chiefs and their predecessors, the Dallas Texans, in the regular-season finale. ... Kuper's replacement, Russ Hochstein, left the game in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury and Chris Clark replaced him.

97% The Muppets

Were I to rate the film based purely on nostalgia and enjoyment, I'd have to go beyond 5 stars (interestingly enough, I think many folks my age will remember the cartoon "Muppet Babies" more than "The Muppet Show," though I got my fair share of both, thankfully). It truly captures the absurd, self-aware, and sentimental humor that Jim Henson use to dazzle young and old audiences alike for years and years, and posits a very tough question: why we haven't made room for these little creatures in our world today? Have we opted for a new brand of irony, one which cannot be wrapped in light humor and empathy (favoring apathy and distancing effects, perhaps)? Or have our attention spans become so fleeting that we require digital spectacle and an aesthetic quality simply unachievable through live action puppets and theatrical sketches? The film's opening sequence, complete with misdirected camera tricks a la vintage David Zucker and a jovial song and dance number that involves an entire suburban community, feels simultaneously captivating and bizarre -- appealing to muscles in our head and heart we may have neglected to exercise in quite some time. Yet any critique the movie aptly makes about the state of entertainment today gets charmingly adorned by clever gags and heartfelt storytelling, all which ask us for a suspension of disbelief somewhat unseen in modern entertainment (particularly of the comic variety). It's only shortcomings lie in the attempt to cram so much nostalgia into one too many plot lines -- somehow, the "weight on Kermit's shoulders" dilemma and his appeal to Mrs. Piggy doesn't quite land as strongly as Walter's identity crisis ("Man or Muppet" blends hilarity and pathos in the best of ways), and we can't help but want more time just visiting with Gonzo, Fozzie, Statler, and Woldorf -- which, you could argue, is a success in itself. You'll leave having had a wonderful time and hopefully reaching on the shelf for those old Muppet Show VHS's. Can the franchise move forward, though? One can only hope.

Harper College student working on NASA project

Some might say that the sky?s the limit when it comes to education, and that couldn?t be more true for Krysti Scotti.

In just two years? time, the 30-year-old married mother of two will have made the leap from contemplating getting her college degree to conducting science experiments for NASA on a microgravity aircraft.

How to help the team

Illumi-Nation, the only team made up of community college students selected for NASA?s 2012 Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program, needs to raise nearly $25,000. The money will fund outreach event supplies, experiment materials and travel expenses. For information on becoming a sponsor, visit Illumi-Nation.net.

?I?ve waited so long to be able to go back to school and focus on it since I value education so much more now,? Scotti said. ?I?m having so much fun just learning.?

This June, the Harper College student will head to Johnson Space Center in Houston, don a flight suit and take to the skies as part of NASA?s Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program.

Of the 14 undergraduate research teams selected to take part in the Microgravity University program, the North Aurora resident?s crew is the only one made up of community college students. The nine-person team, called Illumi-Nation, hails from seven different states.

?We?re kind of the underdogs, because a lot of these other schools like MIT and Yale compete every year and have a ton of money and support,? Scotti said. ?But that only motivates me.?

Scotti, who also works full time in Oswego and next week starts class at Northwestern University in Evanston, said each team proposes, designs, fabricates, flies and then evaluates its own reduced gravity experiment over a six-month period.

But the highlight, of course, is the flight.

Known widely as the ?vomit comet,? the plane will head to its own airspace over the Gulf of Mexico and make roughly 30 parabolic maneuvers ? picture a roller coaster pattern ? that result in brief periods of hypergravity and then weightlessness.

Scotti and four other fliers will have some fun during the first few parabolas, doing midair somersaults and attempting not to slam into the plane?s padded insides as they adjust to the surreal environment.

But then it?s down to business, with their focus turning to ?nanofoam? synthesis experiments.

A theory exists that these substances, when created in a microgravity environment, have antimicrobial properties. That?s significant because the foams could be used in biomedical implants, which could potentially promote tissue regrowth without the risk of infection.

The team hopes its experiment will later be done on the International Space Station.

?In our critique, (NASA) said the strength of our experiment is that there?s a lot of research pending the results of initial research, and our research is that initial research,? Scotti said.

It?s an opportunity Scotti never dreamed of when, one summer night in 2010, she casually mentioned to her husband, Anthony, she was thinking about finishing her education.

?He said, ?well, why don?t you??? said Scotti, a West Chicago High School graduate.

One of the first classes the math major took was astronomy, one of her passions. She excelled and took to heart associate professor Bhasker Moorthy?s talk on NASA?s undergraduate research opportunities.

?I noticed her work ethic right away, and she excelled in every aspect of the course,? Moorthy said.

Scotti happened upon NASA?s Community College Aerospace Scholars program. She was one of 180 students selected, and the only one from Illinois. She spent the summer independently planning a detailed mission to Mars.

Her work earned her one of 48 spots in an on-site program at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., where she spent three days in November developing a prototype Mars rover and presenting the project to NASA engineers.

Scotti believes the experiences and networking have prepared her for the work she?ll have to do leading up to her microgravity flight.

She?s also excited for the outreach required of each team member. She and her husband, who?s on the team?s ground crew, are working with Triple Threat Mentoring to increase interest in math and science among at-risk youth on the east side of Aurora.

Though she transferred to Northwestern, Scotti will stay at Harper to take an ethics class online and conduct the control experiments needed to compare the data that will be compiled on the plane. She?ll soon meet with the chemistry department to set it up.

?What Krysti is doing would be impressive coming from any student at any college in the country,? Moorthy said. ?I think it shows that research can and should be done at community colleges.?

Scotti agrees, and said her time at Harper helped put her on a path she hopes will lead to a Ph.D program in math and physics at California Technical Institute.

?I almost don?t have time to be excited right now because there?s so much going on,? Scotti said. ?But I?m loving every minute of it.?

Giggs: Experience will help United in title push

LONDON (AP) -With most of its title rivals toiling over the Premier League's traditionally busy holiday period, Manchester United has found an extra gear that seems likely to take the team to the top of the standings heading into 2012.

United has wiped out the five-point lead held by Manchester City at the start of December and is seeking a sixth straight win when it hosts bottom side Blackburn on Saturday - the day manager Alex Ferguson celebrates his 70th birthday.

That would leave City in the unusual position of being behind in this season's title race when Roberto Mancini's team visits Sunderland on New Year's Day.

Even a mountainous injury list - currently featuring 11 players - hasn't yet upset United, the reigning champions seeking a 20th English championship success.

"The experience that the manager, the players and the coaching staff have of what's required in the second half of the season, as well as the overall hunger and desire to win competitions, will help us," said veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs, who recently scored for the 20th straight season in the Premier League.

"Big players can't wait for big games. Toward the end of the season the games just get bigger and bigger. For me personally, you want that in the run-in - you want to be involved in big games and going for the title. That's why you become a footballer."

City goes into the latest round of fixtures over the festive period ahead of its fierce rival on goal difference but, without an English title since 1968, it doesn't have United's experience heading into the run-in.

The leaders have dropped five points in its last four matches.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool seem to be out of the title picture, leaving Tottenham, which has won eight of its last 10 matches, looking like the only side capable of breaking the Manchester duopoly at the top of the table.

Seven points behind the pair with a game in hand, Spurs visit Swansea on Saturday where in-form Wales winger Gareth Bale will return to his native country.

"It's great to be up there but we know ultimately that we have to keep concentrating," said Bale, who scored both of Tottenham's goals in the 2-0 win over Norwich on Tuesday.

"It's not even halfway through the season, there's still a lot of games to go and nothing's achieved at this stage of the season. Hopefully we can keep the form that we're in and keep pushing ourselves up the table."

Chelsea - four points adrift in fourth after a run of three straight draws - hosts Aston Villa and fifth-place Arsenal is at home to Queens Park Rangers.

The stand-out match sees Liverpool host Newcastle on Friday, when home striker Andy Carroll looks to start repaying the faith shown in him by manager Kenny Dalglish.

Luis Suarez's one-match suspension for sticking his middle finger up at Fulham fans in a recent league match should ensure Carroll starts at Anfield against the team that sold him for 35 million pounds ($56 million) in a stunning last-minute deal in January's transfer window.

The mighty price tag - which made him one of the world's costliest ever players - appears to be weighing heavily on the England international, who has only scored twice in the league this season and has often started on the bench behind Suarez.

Brushing aside regular stories in the British press about Carroll's off-field habits - he was urged by England manager Fabio Capello in September to drink less if he is to become a regular in the national squad - Dalglish insists the player can still thrive at Liverpool.

"He is adapting well to the change and we will keep working with him and, fortunately for Andy, we have much greater belief in him than a lot of people have who write about him," Dalglish said.

"He is not struggling to deal with anything - I don't think self-belief is a problem for Andy Carroll, I don't see why it should be."

Carroll - a boyhood Newcastle fan - could be set for an extended run in Liverpool's starting lineup after Suarez was handed an eight-match ban from the Football Association last week for racially insulting Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match in October.

The Uruguay international is likely to appeal against the suspension but could face a lengthy spell out, giving regular opportunities to Carroll.

With Liverpool having drawn its last two games, against lowly sides Wigan and Blackburn, it needs to get back to winning ways to keep pace with its rivals for the Champions League places.

Liverpool is currently in sixth place, a point and a place above Newcastle but three off Chelsea.

"I think we deserve to be higher up the table than we are but you've got to earn that right and not talk about it," Dalglish said. "To be fair, they (the players) have done a lot of talking on the pitch for us.

"As long as we are in there somewhere, continue to do the right things and give ourselves a chance (come the end of the season) then we'll be happy with that."
