Secret Service: Letter to White House intercepted

(AP) ? The Secret Service said Thursday that a suspicious letter addressed to President Barack Obama and similar to the ones sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been intercepted by a White House mail screening facility.

The letter has been turned over to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force for testing and investigation.

It was unclear how the letter, intercepted Wednesday by the White House facility, was similar to the ricin-laced ones addressed to Bloomberg.

Two threatening letters postmarked in Louisiana and containing traces of the deadly poison ricin were sent to Bloomberg in New York and to his gun-control group in Washington, officials said.

The anonymous letters were opened in New York on Friday at the city's mail facility in Manhattan and in Washington on Sunday at an office used by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the nonprofit started by Bloomberg, police said Wednesday.

Police said preliminary testing indicated the presence of ricin in both letters involving Bloomberg, but that more testing would be done. Police said the threats contained references to the debate on gun laws and an oily pinkish-orange substance.

Last month, authorities in Washington intercepted a letter addressed to Obama that contained a "suspicious substance." This letter was similar to one mailed to Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker, which tested positive for ricin.

Judge rejects legal challenges by accused Colorado theater gunman

By Keith Coffman

DENVER (Reuters) - A Colorado judge rejected challenges on Wednesday to the state's insanity defense statute and death penalty law by accused movie theater spree gunman James Holmes, resolving a key legal hurdle in the sensational case.

Lawyers for Holmes, accused of killing 12 moviegoers and wounding dozens more in a rampage last July, had argued that the state's insanity law was unconstitutional because it forces their client to cooperate with court-appointed psychiatrists.

They also contended that compelling the 25-year-old former neuroscience graduate student to reveal information to mental health experts that could be used against him at trial violates his constitutional right against self-incrimination. But Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour disagreed.

"The provisions in the insanity statutes and the death penalty statute challenged by the defendant are constitutional," Samour wrote in a 51-page ruling, denying the defense's motions in their entirety.

The defense arguments were the latest legal wrangling surrounding last year's mass shooting in suburban Denver during a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Holmes, who is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder, is scheduled to stand trial in February. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

In March, then-presiding Judge William Sylvester entered a standard not guilty plea for Holmes, but allowed his attorneys to change that to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Samour, who took over the case in April, has ruled that there was "good cause" for Holmes' lawyers to change the plea.

However, Samour said he could not rule on whether he would accept it until the challenges to the insanity defense and death penalty law were resolved, so he could properly advise Holmes of the ramifications of such a plea.

Public defenders for Holmes have said in court pleadings that the former University of Colorado graduate student has been hospitalized twice since his arrest, once for "potential self-inflicted injuries."

He has grown a shaggy beard and longer hair since he was arrested outside the movie theater minutes after the shooting spree. At his first court appearance days after the shooting, he looked dazed and sleepy with his hair dyed orange and red.

Neither prosecutors nor attorneys for Holmes have publicly commented on the case due to a court-imposed gag order.

Switzerland takes step to end tax dispute with US

GENEVA (AP) ? Switzerland said Wednesday it will allow its banks to skirt the country's strict client secrecy laws in order to end a long-running dispute with the United States over tax evasion by American clients with hidden accounts.

Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the Swiss government is acting now because U.S. patience with those Swiss banks suspected of aiding American tax cheats is running out.

She said the aim of the government's planned deal is to "restore stability" to the Swiss banking industry, but that it will be up to the banks themselves to decide if they want to negotiate with U.S. authorities to settle legal disputes over suspected American tax evaders.

The deal was agreed to by the Swiss Cabinet and will go to lawmakers in parliament for approval later this year.

"We are convinced it's a good, pragmatic solution that really helps the banks resolve this issue," Widmer-Schlumpf told a news conference in Bern, the Swiss capital.

She also acknowledged that the talks with U.S. negotiators have been difficult and that the United States would make a unilateral amnesty offer once Switzerland has passed legislation creating the legal basis for banks to hand over client names without violating Swiss law.

Though Switzerland has long been a center for finance, diplomacy and trade, it has been trying to shed its image as a haven for tax evasion and money laundering that has been carried out through the misuse of its famous banking secrecy.

The government has signed deals with other nations to provide greater assistance to foreign tax authorities seeking information on their citizens' accounts.

Widmer-Schlumpf refused to say how much money Swiss banks will have to pay to avoid prosecution. However, she said there will be a distinction between what banks did prior to 2009, when the United States went after UBS AG, Switzerland's biggest bank, and those that continued aiding tax cheats afterward.

UBS entered a deferred prosecution agreement with U.S. authorities in February 2009, and agreed to pay $780 million in fines, penalties, interest and restitution.

"It will be a certain number of banks that engaged in these practices after 2009 that, let's say this honestly, they shouldn't have done," she said.

She declined to provide further details of the agreement, but dismissed reports that the Swiss government will pay billions of dollars upfront to cover fines the country's banks can expect to receive from U.S. authorities.

"I can tell you that Switzerland will pay nothing," she added. "We will ensure that banks can participate in this deal, but we won't do more."

In January, Switzerland's oldest bank, Wegelin & Co., became the first foreign bank to plead guilty in the United States to tax charges when it admitted that it helped American clients hide more than $1.2 billion from the Internal Revenue Service. The bank, which was founded in 1741, is closing after admitting to helping American tax cheats.

More than a dozen Swiss banks, including UBS and Switzerland's second-biggest bank, Credit Suisse, have been caught up in the long-running U.S. probe.

Widmer-Schlumpf stressed, however, that a new Swiss law would work on the basis of the existing legal assistance procedure: the United States has to formally request information about Americans' past suspected breaches of their U.S. tax obligations.

"What we're really aiming for is that stability and calm finally returns, so our banks can go after their core business, which is providing good services," she said.

In a statement, the government said it "wants to create the legal basis for resolving the tax dispute with the United States" by enabling banks to make their own agreements with the U.S. Justice Department and put the disputes behind them.

"The solution chosen will allow legal closure to be achieved without having to enact new legislation with retroactive effect or indeed applying emergency law," the government said. Banks that cooperate with U.S. authorities, it added, would be obliged to provide maximum protection for their employees against discrimination or dismissal for following orders.

The Swiss Bank Employers Association AGV said the agreement would ensure "legal certainty for bank clients and customers" while preventing prosecution of bank employees. Separately, banks and employers have agreed that bankers who face hardship due to legal proceedings will be able to draw on a special 2.5 million Swiss francs ($2.6 million) fund.

Apple hires EPA veteran Lisa Jackson to boost its environmental efforts

We're used to Apple's CEO teasing product strategies at D Conferences, but not staffing changes. And yet, here we are: Tim Cook has revealed at D11 that former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson is joining Apple to coordinate the firm's drive toward eco-friendliness. While there are few specifics at this stage, including Jackson's title, we know that she'll report directly to Cook. There's certainly no shortage of tasks for her to handle: along with Apple's shift toward renewable energy sources, she also has to worry about the environmental impact of the products themselves.

Researchers build machine that identifies music after hearing only three notes

DNP blah blah music blah

Can you identify Beethoven's Sonata No. 9 after hearing a mere three notes? Probably not, but a group of computer scientists and music scholars have built a machine that can do just that. The team -- composed of Pablo Rodriguez Zivic, Favio Shifres and Guillermo Cecchi -- has developed an algorithm capable of identifying patterns across distinct periods of Western music based on semi-tones and notes. Beyond its musical application, the machine represents tantalizing possibilities for research into disorders that affect speech. For example, current mechanical methods are already capable of recognizing vocal patterns common in the early stages of Parkinson's, but the trio hopes to utilize their project for even earlier detection. Such an algorithm could also be instrumental in identifying psychiatric conditions that impact the speech centers of the brain. Unfortunately, the lack of a comprehensive database of different types of speech patterns stands in the way of wider implementation. Even so, the team is hopeful that verbal tests might someday be used in place of invasive diagnostic procedures to identify certain illnesses.

Turkish foreign minister joins push to solve Syria opposition crisis

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu joined senior Arab and Western envoys on Wednesday in a last-ditch effort to solve a crisis in Syria's opposition which threatens to derail a planned peace conference.

The Syrian National Coalition members meeting in Istanbul have so far failed to agree to attend the Geneva conference, provisionally planned for June, or who should represent them, and is deadlocked over appointing a new leadership and Western-backed proposals to widen its membership.

"Davutoglu addressed the coalition and told them that the international community is not taking sides but that the coalition needs to be representative to retain credibility," one source at the meeting said.

"The message was clear that if they don't re-organize themselves there are other parties that could attend Geneva."

Davutoglu joined senior Saudi, Qatari, Jordanian, U.S. and French officials who have been monitoring the talks, now in their seventh day, at a hotel in Istanbul to meet with those opposition members who had not left in frustration.

"This is really the last-ditch effort. Either it succeeds or the coalition effectively collapses," said one senior source within the alliance.

The 60-member coalition has failed to agree on the wider involvement of a liberal bloc led by opposition campaigner Michel Kilo, to the dismay of Western and some Arab backers keen to reduce the influence of Islamists.

Failure to broaden the coalition, in which Qatar and a bloc largely influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood has been playing the driving role, could prompt defections by some of its members and undermine the legitimacy of the coalition.

Russia and the United States are trying to bring Assad's representatives and the opposition together at the Geneva conference, the first serious diplomatic effort in nearly a year to end a war which has killed more than 80,000 people.

Syria's government has said it will attend, but the opposition has not yet committed, potentially a major embarrassment for Washington and the alliance's other backers.

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

The good news: If you liked Windows 8, its first major update is going fix a ton of the little things that bothered you. The bad news: You might not like Windows 8. And there's nothing here that will change that. At least there's a Start button!

Updating

Microsoft today is giving a sneak peak at Windows 8.1, previously known as Windows Blue. And while it may not be the drastic walkback of the Metro design theory you were hoping for, there's plenty here to like. Starting with:

The Start Button

Yes, the rumors are true. It's back. It'll be there by default, in both desktop mode and in your lovely tiled rubric. See? There it is, right there in the lower lefthand corner:

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

Missed you, friend! It won't always be immediately visible in whatever app you're using, but you're never more than a mouse-over away from complete control over your Windows domain.

All About You

The Start button (rightly) is going to garner the most attention, but Windows 8.1 also features a bevy of smaller tweaks that let you better configure your PC to your needs. Much of this is aesthetic; you've got more control over your Start screen background, make your Lock screen a slideshow of pictures if you want to turn Surface into the world's most expensive digital picture frame, and uninstall, resize, or move apps in groups instead of one at a time.

Windows 8.1: Little Fixes, Same Big Ideas (Oh, and a Start Button)

There's less presumption in Windows 8.1, too. New apps don't automatically wind up on your Start screen; they instead get shimmied off to an apps view, from which you can choose where and how to pin it.

(AP) ? John Tortorella was defiant in stating that the New York Rangers didn't take a step back when they were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round.

General manager Glen Sather thought otherwise and fired the combative coach on Wednesday.

The fiery Tortorella was let go four days after the Rangers' season ended with a Game 5 loss at Boston to the Bruins. New York had reached the Eastern Conference finals last year and was considered to be a championship contender in this lockout-shortened season.

"I came up with the decision that I really needed to do something to improve our team going forward," Sather said during a conference call. "Every coach has a shelf life. I've told every guy that I've hired that at some point in time this is going to change.

"Our goal is to win the Stanley Cup and we didn't achieve that goal this year. I had to make a decision, so I did."

Tortorella was unexpectedly dismissed with one year left on his contract. In 319 regular-season games with New York, including a four-game run at the end of the 1999-2000 season, Tortorella went 171-118-1-29. He was 19-25 in the postseason, and reached the playoffs in four of five seasons after taking over as coach in February 2009.

"Every time a coach gets fired, it is a surprise for me, because ultimately, we, the players, are responsible for our own play on the ice," Rangers backup goaltender Martin Biron told the Associated Press in a text message.

Tortorella, hired to replace Tom Renney with 21 games remaining in the 2008-09 season, achieved some success with the Rangers but couldn't match the Stanley Cup title he earned in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sather said Tortorella's contract status didn't factor into the decision.

"It wasn't one thing and I am certainly not going to speculate or start to criticize what happened with Torts and give you a lot of reasons why we decided to do this," Sather said. "After the analytical work that we do every year at the end of the season, trying to decide how we're going to improve the team and how we're going to move forward, this is a decision I made."

Sather didn't name an immediate replacement, but hopes to have a new coach in place by the June 30 NHL draft in Newark, N.J.

Former NHL coaches Lindy Ruff and Alain Vigneault could be candidates for New York. Sather wouldn't speculate whether anyone currently employed by the Rangers would be considered. The fate of assistant coach Mike Sullivan will be decided during the team's organizational meetings in June.

"Hopefully whoever we hire has a lot of the good things that Torts had and a lot of good things that Tom Renney had," Sather said. "There are a number of good coaches around, and a lot of them have different qualities. It is a little tricky sometimes to find someone who has all those qualities, but hopefully that's what we're going to have this time around.

"I am certain that we're going to find the right person."

Last season, Tortorella led the Rangers to 51 wins ? the second-most in franchise history ? and 109 points before they were beaten in six games by New Jersey in the conference finals. He finished his Rangers tenure in fourth place on the team's career coaching wins list.

The 54-year-old Tortorella got the Rangers back into the playoffs in this lockout-shortened season, and New York outlasted Washington in seven games in the first round of the playoffs before being knocked out by Boston.

"I felt this was a decision that had to be made going forward," Sather said. "I think he was shocked, but he is a gentleman and he took it very well."

Tortorella made curious comments on Monday when the Rangers packed up for the season, which could have led to his ouster. In his final meeting with reporters, Tortorella said his club wasn't emotionally ready to take on Boston after getting past Washington with back-to-back shutout wins when it faced elimination.

"One of the things, and it falls on my shoulders, is our team's mindset going into another round," Tortorella said. "I don't think our mindset was ready to play another series and to the level you need to be at. It didn't have a playoff atmosphere.

"That's what I struggle with right now. I didn't do a good enough job in correcting and getting their mindset back to not only play at the level of a Game 7 in the first round but get ready for round 2, which is always going to be tougher."

Even though the Rangers were knocked out earlier this year, Tortorella emphatically stated he didn't believe the team regressed.

"I know the surrounding feeling here is that it was a negative season, a disappointing season. I don't buy it and I won't," Tortorella said. "There are some good things that happened. I don't think we took a step backward. I think this is a sideways step in our lineup and how things worked out.

"We played really well our last couple of months to get in, found a way to win a big series against Washington, and against Boston I thought we competed right to the end."

However, starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist disagreed with that assessment. Lundqvist is entering the final year of his contract and would be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

"It is a step back," Lundqvist said. "We were in the conference finals last year, we had high expectations on ourselves this year. It didn't go our way, so yeah it is a step back. It's tough to make it there, though. You can't just expect it to happen."

Sather said he hadn't talked to Lundqvist, but added the team's plan is to sign him to a new long-term deal.

The Rangers entered the 48-game season as a prime contender to win the Stanley Cup, especially after the offseason acquisition of top forward Rick Nash in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

After a slow start, the Rangers rallied to a 26-18-4 record and the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

But New York struggled to score in the postseason, and Nash and Brad Richards were among the biggest offenders. Nash recorded only one goal and five assists in the Rangers' 12 playoff games.

Richards, who has seven years remaining on a nine-year deal, was a bigger disappointment and was a healthy scratch by Tortorella in the final two games against the Bruins. Sather said that move was an organizational decision.

Richards had thrived under Tortorella when they won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay, but he managed only one goal and zero assists in his 10 postseason games. Richards will likely also be gone from the Rangers, who can buy out the remainder of his lucrative deal and remove him from the salary cap that will go down for next season.

Tortorella is the career leader in wins by a U.S.-born coach with 410. He was an assistant coach with the Rangers in the 1999-2000 season and took over for John Muckler as head coach for the final four games.

Tortorella was then hired by the Lightning and he was their coach for seven seasons ? compiling a mark of 239-222-36-38 and earning the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in the championship 2003-04 season.

Sometimes less really is more. Though a variety of corn known as brown midrib doesn?t grow as tall as other types of corn, it does provide cows with better nutrition. The rub: It costs more. But the value of the bonus milk produced by cows fed the short corn more than covers its extra costs, a 15-year-old dairy farmer now reports.

Bennett Lee Gibson of Fremont High School in Ogden, Utah, presented his findings May 13 in Phoenix, Ariz. He was a finalist?at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Xbox One Internet Connectivity - Business Insider

Last week Microsoft revealed the successor to the nearly eight-year-old Xbox 360,?the Xbox One.

Despite not having a release date other than "later this year," the new video game console is already stirring up controversy among gamers because it hasn't been clear whether or not the console will require an Internet connection to work.

The Xbox One will supposedly need to connect to the Internet to verify that you aren't trying to play pirated games.?

Early reports about the console stated that it wouldn't require "a constant Internet connection" nor block users from playing used games, based on statements from Xbox UK's director of marketing. However, when journalists asked for clarification regarding what Microsoft meant by "constant," Microsoft Games Studios General Manager Matt Booty noted that in the case of Internet connections going down, "there are likely to be some games modes that you'll be able to continue to play."

In response to fears that this meant that most games would require Internet connectivity, a serious problem for gamers with spotty or non-existent connections, the Xbox PR team put the following update on the Xbox One FAQ page:

No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We?re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

So the official response was that yes, the Xbox One will require an Internet connection, just not all the time. Thus the question in gamers heads became: how often? Video game news site Kotaku sought out an answer from Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison, who said that the console would check in with Microsoft servers once a day.?

But then Microsoft backpedaled on its response. It gave video game site Polygon a statement that said Harrison was only talking about "potential scenarios" with the Xbox One:

While Phil [Harrison] discussed many potential scenarios around games on Xbox One, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Finally, in an interview with Business Insider, Xbox's hardware boss?Todd Holmdahl said users will only need to connect the Xbox One to the Internet to authenticate it, but you won't be required to connect to play games.

Bottom line: it's pretty clear that Microsoft hasn't developed a consistent policy for how the Xbox One will connect online and how often it will need to do so in order to work.

Searchers find body of teen missing in Texas flood

SCHERTZ, Texas (AP) ? Search teams on Sunday found the body of teenager who was swept away by floodwaters as he tried to swim across a swollen creek near San Antonio, authorities said.

Avron Adams, 18, of Schertz, and a friend got caught Saturday in the swift waters of Cibolo Creek after about half a dozen friends swam across. One friend held onto a tree branch and got out, but Adams did not, officials said.

David Harris, a spokesman for Schertz, said about 5:45 p.m. searchers located Adams' body near the water's edge. Harris said Adams' family has been notified.

"The body was found near where the search and rescue dogs had identified a scent," Harris said.

Earlier Sunday, Adams' father said he was holding out hope.

"We're hopeful, but at this point, you just don't know," his father, Kenneth Adams, told The Associated Press as his wife stood nearby. "It's very hard. We're just keeping the faith."

The search effort included helicopters, divers and rescue teams in inflatable boats.

The usually dry creek in Schertz, northeast of San Antonio, had dropped about 10 feet since Saturday. Other rivers in the San Antonio area and surrounding counties continued to drop after peaking above the flood stage, but flood warnings remained in effect Sunday. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for seven counties until 6 p.m. Sunday, saying thunderstorms could produce heavy rainfall.

Two women died Saturday after being swept away by floodwaters, some as high as 10 feet on some roads. One who was trapped in her car climbed to the roof before being swept away, and her body was found against a fence, said San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove. Emergency officials also recovered the body of a woman in her 60s, whose car was carried away by water as firefighters were trying to rescue her. Authorities did not immediately identify the women who died.

On Sunday, about 20 people were at a shelter set up by the American Red Cross, including some whose apartment complex roof caved in under the weight of the heavy rainfall.

Roxanne DeLeon arrived there Sunday with her 18-month-old son, 6-year-old daughter, 15-year-old daughter and husband, a day after escaping through waist-deep water in their rented home with nothing but what they were wearing, her purse and some diapers. They didn't even have time to grab shoes.

DeLeon said they spent the night on the floor of a relative's home because family members don't have enough room for all of them, and their insurance agent cannot provide help that would get them into a motel or apartment until after Memorial Day.

"It feels like we're stuck," DeLeon said Sunday. "One relative can keep my son part of the day while I'm at work, but who's going to pick up my kids from school? I never thought my family would go through something like this."

The San Antonio International Airport recorded 9.87 inches of rain Saturday, the second-highest official daily rainfall in city history.

Hipstamatic's Oggl photo sharing community now open to all

Oggl, Hipstamatic's new photo sharing service for the iPhone, has been updated in the App Store removing the requirement for an invite code. New users can now download the app and signup and join the new community that Hipstamatic bills as "A community of creative people capturing & curating their Lives through photography."

Soon after Oggl went live ?and we received our invite code?we took the new service for a spin and on the whole were pretty impressed. The app itself is really well done, if slightly confusing to get a handle on straight away. Opening up to a wider audience now hopefully means the community will grow and we'll get a real indication of how well it may do. The app is free to download, but a subscription of $2.99 quarterly and $9.99 yearly is necessary to get the absolute best out of Oggl.

So, first time Oggl users, give us your thoughts on the service! How are you finding it compared to the likes of Instagram, or even Flickr?

How would you change HP's Envy Sleekbook 6z?

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/07/body5-1342020253.jpg

Intel's Kirk Skaugen was relaxed about "me too" thin-and-light devices trailing behind Ultrabooks like Remoras. Perhaps it's because of our lukewarm reception of devices like HP's Envy Sleekbook 6z, which we found to be a little lumpen. While we liked its understated design, the sluggish AMD internals and flaky trackpad meant we weren't feeling particularly fondly on this piece of hardware. This is where you come in. Why not dream up a budget laptop that could hit the same price point but without the flaws -- the more imaginative, the better.

Alien planets could shed light on Earth's climate future

NASA

Comparing the climates of the terrestrial planets Mars, Earth and Venus is a complex task.

By Leslie Mullen, Astrobiology Magazine, SPACE.com

A Comparative Climatology Symposium held at NASA Headquarters on May 7 focused on new approaches to climate research by highlighting the similarities and contrasts between the environments of the rocky worlds Venus, Earth, Mars and Saturn?s smoggy moon Titan.?

The symposium also included discussions about exoplanets, the sun and past, present and future space missions.

John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate, said that the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope will be able to make important observations of the atmospheres of exoplanets. [Photos: The James Webb Space Telescope]

He said JWST won?t be able to locate the exoplanets, only study them, but the recently selected TESS mission could act as a? planet scout for JWST targets. It is estimated that TESS will discover around 300 "super-Earth" alien planets, many of them in the habitable zone.

But the number one challenge, Grunsfeld noted, is figuring out the climate of our own planet.

Understanding climate change
Jim Green, NASA?s Planetary Science Division Director, said that one goal is to examine a variety of planetary bodies as a system, to see if there are trends or similarities. He also pointed out that from a planetary scientist?s perspective, climate change on our planet is not a new thing.

"Earth?s climate has done nothing but change," Green said.?

Green said that three Earth-observing satellites will be launched this year, and they will help us better understand how the climate is currently changing and the implications that has for our planet?s environment.

David Grinspoon, holder of the first Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress chair in Astrobiology, talked about Mars? "ferocious and interesting" meteorology, and how Martian global dust storms may help unravel what happened on our planet during the K-T extinction 65 million years ago, when an asteroid hitting the Yucatan Peninsula is thought to have eradicated 75 percent of animals and plants on Earth, including the dinosaurs. [Wipeout: History's Most Mysterious Extinctions]

The 'Venus mafia'
As for Venus, Grinspoon said scientists believe current-day volcanism on Venus is thought to be necessary to sustain the planet?s thick clouds. He added that the active surface has eradicated most ancient rocks, preventing us from easily understanding Venus? early history.

Grinspoon also discussed the unique climate of Titan, noting that the methane cycle on this moon of Saturn is "like Earth's hydrological cycle on steroids."

Studying the climates of Mars, Venus, Titan and even exoplanets could help us refine our climate models of the Earth. However, Grinspoon said that "clouds are the biggest uncertainty in understanding the past of Venus and predicting the future of Earth."

Tying climatology to astrobiology, Grinspoon said that our expectations of the other planets, in the absence of data, were that they'd be much more Earth-like than they actually are. We still haven?t found a planet quite like our own, although astronomers are zeroing in on exoplanets that should have habitable conditions.

But, Grinspoon said, "it may be that conditions for life's origin aren't rare, but the hard part is the persistence of habitable conditions."

Venus was a popular topic during the symposium. Roald Sagdeev, University of Maryland professor and former director of the Space Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, said during an overview of the Russian missions to Venus that "from the point of view of habitability, Venus is like having a dead body to study, which is of course very useful for learning anatomy."

David Crisp, Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory/California Institute of Technology, said that sending weather balloons to Venus taught us a lot about atmospheric physics. And Roger Bonnet, Executive Director of the International Space Science Institute, said there was no chance for a big "flagship" mission to Venus, since the viewpoint among many amounts to "Who cares about clouds and wind on Venus, when we have so much of that on Earth? We want to see little green men!"

One participant noted the presence of "the Venus mafia" at the symposium, inferring that the focus on Earth?s "twin planet" had muscled out discussion of other places of interest.?

Habitable exoplanets
But in addition to studies of Venus and other terrestrial worlds, there was a talk about our sun and its influence on space weather, and general discussions about refining climate models, defining habitable zones, and the importance of basic research.

The participants seemed to agree that, most importantly, planetary climate studies needed to be interdisciplinary, with scientists from different fields communicating and collaborating.

Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters, also pointed out that we should never become complacent in our scientific understanding. For instance, he said that while climate models have not been able to make early Mars warm enough to sustain liquid water on its surface, the same can be true for models of the young Earth.?

And when it comes to understanding where a planet needs to reside in its solar system to be habitable ? the so-called Goldilocks Zone where the temperature is just right for water to be liquid rather than ice or gas ? he commented that "the approach [to the habitable zone] is very Goldilocks in that it's almost a fairy tale."???

Finally, Meyer noted, just when we thought we understood how planets are made, we discovered hot Jupiters and other unusual exoplanets that "turned all of our planet formation models on their head."?

"And that?s a good thing," he added.

The featured speakers at NASA's Comparative Climatology Symposium, titled "New Approaches to Climate Research," were John Grunsfeld, Jim Green, David Grinspoon, Lori Glaze, Mark Bullock, Roald Sagdeev, Jack Kaye, Lennart Bengtsson, David Crisp, Roger Bonnet, Mark Marley, and Madhulika Guhathakurta.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama visited tornado-devastated Moore, Okla., Sunday, consoling people staggered by the loss of life and property and promising that the government will be behind them "every step of the way."

"I'm just a messenger here," the president said, saying "folks are behind you" across America. He offered moral and monetary support in the wake of the monstrous EF5 tornado that killed 24 people, including 10 children, last Monday afternoon.

Standing with Gov. Mary Fallin and other state and federal officials, Obama noted a substantial rebuilding job ahead and said that "our hearts go out to you."

"This is a strong community with strong character. There's no doubt they will bounce back," he said. "But they need help."

The White House said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma. "These storm shelters can be the difference between life and death," presidential spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters accompanying Obama to Oklahoma on Air Force One.

For Obama, Sunday's visit had an all-too-familiar ring.

Only five months into his second term, he has traveled to the northeast to console people in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, and visited Connecticut and Arizona to comfort people traumatized by shooting rampages. He also has undertaken his consoler-in-chief role at the site of plant explosions and mine disasters, not to mention a series of natural disasters including Joplin, Mo., and the Jersey Shore, which was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last year.

Once on the ground, Obama urged the American people to make contributions, saying the damage was "pretty hard to comprehend."

Shortly after his arrival on a partly cloudy day, Obama rode past grassy fields strewn with scattered debris, witnessing devastation so awesome that it appeared as if garbage had literally rained from the sky. His first stop was the demolished site of the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven students were killed when the tornado turned the one-story building into a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal.

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand. As he walked, the demolished school was on his left and on his right, homes as far as the eye could see were reduced to piles of rubble. Vehicles were turned upside down and toys like a pink doll carriage and children's books were strewn with furniture and ripped out wall insulation. Every tree had been stripped of its leaves and bark.

Obama at one point joined the Lewis family, which lost their home behind the school. He said the important thing was that they survived and could replace their things.

"What a mess," he told their son Zack, a third grader at the shattered school. Zack's father, Scott, ran into the school just before the storm hit and ran with his terrified son back to their home's storm shelter.

"You've got some story to tell," Obama told the boy. "This is something you'll remember all your life."

Obama later met privately with victims' families at Moore Fire Department Station (hash)1, which has turned into a command center with dozens of first responders sitting at folding tables where fire trucks are normally parked. Obama marveled that they saved so many lives "given the devastation."

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand.

As he descended the stairs upon landing at Tinker Air Base near here, Obama was greeted first by Fallin, who had said earlier she appreciated the visit, but that her state also needed quick action from FEMA.

The Republican governor said that so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but said she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Fallin said the money is particularly vital for the victims. "A lot of people lose their checkbooks, they lose their credit cards, they lose their driver's license, their birth certificates, their insurance papers, they lose everything, and they have no cash. And some of the banks were even hit, the ATM machines, so people need cash to get immediate needs," she said on CBS.

Earnest touted the federal contributions so far, including Obama's signing of a disaster declaration within hours of the storm to speed aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Earnest said that 450 FEMA personnel were working on the ground in Oklahoma and have delivered 43,000 meals, 150,000 liters of water and thousands of cots, blankets and tarps. He said 4,200 people have applied for disaster assistance, and $3.4 million in payments have been approved.

Among the tornado victims were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.
