Kim Lane Scheppele's devastating indictment of the ... - Politics.hu

Anyone who has the time and inclination should make sure to read Princeton Professor Kim Lane Scheppele?s (prepared) testimony to the much-publicized hearing of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe in Washington, which took place yesterday in Washington. (Hungarian Spectrum has the whole thing, as well as a few useful accompanying graphics.)

It is a long (almost 7,500 words) polemic. But, as an indication of just how many objections there are to the current government?s approach to constitutionalism, it is almost all ?meat.?

I seem to be one of those rare critics of the Orb?n government who nevertheless is willing to concede that there has been a fair bit of hysteria and piling on in reaction to the current state of democracy in Hungary. I have also been happy to point out when critics of the government have been fast and loose with the truth.

But it is hard for me to imagine that anyone who values limited constitutional, government could read Scheppele?s testimony and finding it anything but devastating. We are truly crossing the Rubicon.
