I love your blog! I'm writing to ask for your opinion if it wouldn't be too much of an imposition. My son is very bright and has mild Aspergers. He is reading above grade level but struggles with pragmatics (if it isn't specifically stated in the text he has trouble drawing inferences). I am homeschooling him for 2nd grade because we were unable to find a program that seemed like a good fit. He is labeled "twice exceptional" and has an amazing, wonderful, fascinating brain. I kept hearing the words "he can't" when he clearly can do anything he sets his mind to. He was starting to feel like a problem child and hate learning, when he has always been curious, interested, and happy to read anything interesting that I provided. So, we decided to take advantage of the large homeschooling community in our area and will be giving it a try, but I'd like some guidance from a professional that has high standards and understands learning differences. I've seen your comments on Huffington Post and read your blog and you seem to be an incredible teacher with a great understanding of kids and reading. I would really appreciate any suggestions you would be willing to share.

I am having trouble finding a good Language Arts curriculum that will challenge and interest him and we start homeschooling in 2 weeks. For 1st grade his school used Scott Foresman Reading which seemed to be almost an entire grade level above what our Virginia public schools are using. I would just skip to a 3rd grade LA curriculum but I think he needs more practice due to his issues with pragmatics which negatively impacts his reading comprehension (he remembers what he has read, but might not understand it thoroughly due to difficulty drawing conclusions). He is very good at spelling, has the vocabulary of a much older child, and is very interested in science and technology. My plan for the summer is to help him develop an ear for the English Language through reading poetry together, listening to songs and analyzing the various methods used by song writers to make lyrics interesting (double meanings, alliteration, rhyming, patterns, etc.), reading well written literature that has stood the test of time, and reading news for kids to understand writing for different purposes. He already knows what homophones, nouns, proper nouns, and antonyms are and has fun discussing them as we read so I would like to continue with grammar but it will not be our main focus. We will be using Mad Libs to continue learning parts of speech in addition to any curriculum.

I am looking for ways of determining his reading level. His teacher was unable to provide much information, but when I asked if 3rd grade books would be too advanced, she said no. I would guess that he reads at a 4th grade level. I am looking for a good reading list (chapter books, websites, magazines, and poetry).

Writing is a struggle for him. Keeping an idea in his head and remembering all of the rules and how to form lower case letters at the same time is very challenging, so I am looking for a Language Arts curriculum that inspires him to want to write.Handwriting is a struggle, but he has asked that we begin learning cursive, so I will give it a try without pushing too hard. I'm trying to decide if narration, dictation, and copy work would be good tools for us to use until he is more developmentally ready to write down his thoughts independently and he will be using software to learn to type to see if that helps him put his thoughts down on paper more easily.

He scores 99th percentile on standardized tests (ERB).

Brady will turn 7 on July first, so he was always the youngest in his class. That is one of the reasons I was willing to take the chance on a year long homeschooling experiment; if I had it to do all over again I would have waited a year to put him in school. We didn't know he was on the Autism Spectrum until he was 5 and he was so bright that I put him in preschool at 3. His teachers said holding him back a year would be a mistake because he was already so bored, and he does very well when worked with one on one, so hopefully I am not damaging him for life!

Is there a standardized test that is a better indicator of understanding and knowledge than the school system typically uses? In Virginia we are required to test each year as proof of progress when homeschooling, but it seems many standardized tests these days are more about the teacher than the student.

Public Diplomacy Minister Yuli-Yoel Edelstein wrote to Apple on Tuesday, complaining that the "ThirdIntifada" application -- a reference to a future uprising -- conveyed information about protests, some violent, planned against Israel.

A statement issued by Edelstein's ministry on Thursday welcomed "Apple's swift action" in removing the application and praised the company's decision as "another important step in preventing violent incitement in the new media."

A search for "ThirdIntifada" in the iTunes store found no matches.

The application offered users a stream of news stories and editorials in Arabic, announced upcoming protests and included links to nationalistic Palestinian videos and songs.

Edelstein said the developers of the application had opened a similar page on Facebook three months ago that called for an uprising against Israel through the use of lethal force.

He said he had complained to Facebook, which subsequently removed the page.

In the ministry statement announcing Apple's move, Edelstein was quoted as saying the company, like Facebook, "had proven it shared values that stand in opposition to violence, incitement and terror."

Gomez gets girl-power boost in new music and film (AP)

NEW YORK ? Katy Perry and Britney Spears appear on a CD together but it's not the latest "Now" compilation.

Rather, the pop singers have written songs on Selena Gomez & the Scene's new album, "When the Sun Goes Down."

"I did have a lot of artists that I was very lucky enough to have songs written by and it's a good, uplifting album," Gomez said of her third CD. "It's really fun and very dance-y and I hope people like it."

Spears co-wrote the dance song "Whiplash," while Perry co-penned "That's More Like It. Singer Priscilla Renea ? who co-wrote Rihanna's "California King Bed" and Cheryl Cole's "Promise This" ? co-penned three songs on Gomez's album, including the lead single and Top 40 hit "Who Says." And the disc has a writing credit and guest appearance from British singer Pixie Lott.

"I think it's a powerful CD," Gomez said in a recent interview.

The 18-year-old's first two albums have reached gold status. The new record ? which has three songs co-penned by Gomez ? is out next week.

Days after her disc's release, Gomez will get another girl-power boost with the July 1 release of her new movie, "Monte Carlo," which also stars Leighton Meester of "Gossip Girl" and was co-produced by Nicole Kidman.

Gomez says leaving Los Angeles to shoot in Paris and Budapest was "so refreshing." But the grueling promotional tour that has followed ? maybe not so much.

The nationwide campaign, including a string of mall appearances, was recently interrupted when Gomez was hospitalized in Los Angeles for exhaustion, malnourishment and low iron.

The singer-actress, who is dating teen pop star Justin Bieber, says she enjoys having friends "in the business" and others who are not.

"Personally for me, I feel like it's good to have a balance of both," she said. "I have people in my life that are in the business and then I have friends who aren't in the business and family, so it's nice to kind of keep that.

"You want people that obviously understand what you're going through and then you also want people that's like, `Let's not talk about (movie) sets or press or any of that, let's just talk about normal things.'"

Yet the entertainer, whose "Wizards of Waverly Place" is ending its fourth and final season on Disney, says she's noticed that her life ? and the people around her ? are changing.

"Your life definitely changes a little bit and you kind of think people's motives change toward you," she said. "Just got to be careful ? that's all."

Indonesian MPs have called for a ban on workers being sent to the Middle East, after Saudi Arabia executed a maid without informing Jakarta.

Indonesia has recalled its ambassador to Riyadh to express its anger.

A crowd of protesters gathered outside the Saudi embassy in Jakarta displaying banners and T-shirts in support of the executed worker.

The maid, Ruyati binti Sapubi, was beheaded with a sword on Saturday after confessing to murdering her boss.

Indonesian media reports said she attacked her boss with a meat cleaver after being denied permission to return home.

About 1.5 million Indonesians work in Saudi Arabia - many of them as domestic maids.

Anger has been growing in recent years over the treatment of migrant workers - particularly maids, who often complain of mistreatment.

Parliamentary speaker Priyo Budi Santoso said MPs had told the government they must stop sending workers to the Middle East.

"We have asked the government to temporarily suspend sending Indonesian workers overseas, especially countries which refuse to sign an agreement which protects our workers' rights," he said.

Some MPs also called for the resignation of senior government figures including Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

Mr Marty addressed parliament on Monday, telling them that Saudi Arabia had a history of executing people without giving proper notification.

"It is regrettable that Saudi Arabia has repeatedly ignored its international obligation to inform related countries about consular affairs their nationals are facing," he said.

Indonesia's ambassador to Riyadh was recalled on Monday for consultations, and officials said they had lodged a strong protest with the Saudi authorities.

Meanwhile, a group of about 50 people gathered outside to the Saudi embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday.

They wore T-shirts emblazoned with "corrupt government, workers are beheaded" and carried banners proclaiming: "Our hearts for Ruyati."

Indonesia only recently resumed sending workers to Malaysia, after a row over the abuse of maids led to a two-year suspension in the practice.

A row erupted also in April when a Saudi woman, convicted of beating and torturing an Indonesian maid, had her conviction quashed on appeal.
