One of the strongest instincts that a Yorkshire terrier can have is constant chewing. Often Yorkshire terriers begin exibiting chewing when still very young when they try to chew everything they can possibly find. Chewing behavior is quite normal for Yorkies and it?s very important to take appropriate actions to prevent them from chewing as soon as possible if you want your belongings to be safe.
As your Yorkie grows their chewing can transform into a much more serious issue and it can become impossible to stop.
Why Do Yorkshire Terriers Chew?
Chewing behavior happens for many reasons and you need to know that it will likely happen to your Yorkie at first whether you like it or not. Your goal should be to direct it toward the right mediums and to minimize it where it can cause destruction. Remember, that some Yorkies are hardwired to chew more than other Yorkies. You?ll need to reduce the access to the things they can possibly chew in your house making necessery adjustments.?
Yorkie Training Tips on Stopping Them to Chew
First thing that you need to understand is that most Yorkies begin to chew when they are pupies and very young. When Yorkie puppies are tething they have that urge to chew, so they are looking for anything that they can possibly chew. If you give your Yorkie some items to chew such as your shoes or maybe a sock you?re saying to them that it ok to chew those things. If your Yorkie often raids your closet to lookng for things to try to remember if you used to give them similar items in the past when they were puppies for chewing.
Even if you never gave your Yorkies any of your things to chew on but they nevertheles chew anyway you must communicate to them that it?s not okay and absolutely unaccepable. Remember that just screaming and yelling at your Yorkie when they chew will not get you anywhere and you will not have any good results. To Yorkies chewing is something very natural and they will do it forever unles, you, as their master, tell them that you don?t want that to happen anymore.
To begin with, you may want to crate train your Yorkie first By isolating the Yorkie from a large space such as your entire house or a condo a can gain a better control on what they do when you are apsent. To that end, when you are at home, make sure you have a chewing substitute to hand them when they start chewing on a shoe, or a cushion, or whatever else in your home they gravitate towards. Usually a rawhide is a good idea since most Yorkies like to chew on leather or suede. Some Yorkies are partial toward rawhide, however, so you may want to take them to the pet store with you and have them choose a chew toy from the racks there.
Deterents/Sprays from Chewing
If your Yorkie continuously finds new things to chew around your home, eats them and even deficates in your household, first consider Yorkie poo training which is also known as housebreaking a Yorkie. However, there are other ways to stop this problem. Tere are some special detergents that dogs, including Yorkies, absolutely hate especially while chewing on something. Bitter apple spray works for many dogs including Yorkies, as does cayenne pepper spray. Be sure to get organic stuff and non-chemically ladden. The spray should be not dangerous for health and just taste bad. Make sure that the spray doesn?t cause pain.
This paricular kind of spray is especially usefull when it comes to Yorkie chewing on carpets and cushions. In addition it is always helpful to teach a Yorkie the command ?leave it?. This common command forces the Yorkie to drop what they are doing immediately, as you take control of the item. This is ine of the so called ?alpha? commands that is incredibly useful when you take your Yorky for a walk. The last thing you would want is when your Yorkie has something discusting in their mouth (trash, dead animal) and not willing to drop it. It takes a lot of patience to teach your Yorkie the ?leave it? command, however a clicker and treats can accelerate the process.
Potential Health Concerns
If your Yorkie chews chronically and doesn?t stop no matter what they possibly have a health condition that should be addressed. This ma be something serious and not just the Yorkie acting out. This is an issue that should be addressed by your vet as it can lead to poisoning or intestinal blockage. If your Yorkie eats a coin or something like that and just does it once it is likely an accident. If it occurs repeatedly and cannot be managed with sprays and training a Yorkshire terrier option doesn?t work as well, see a vet to learn what options you have.
